What is photo to line art?

Photo to line art turns a photograph into outlines by finding its edges, the boundaries where one form ends and another begins. This converter finds them with a small neural edge model that runs on your device, offers Line weight and Detail controls, and exports a PNG, SVG strokes or a one-page PDF for tracing, transfer or coloring pages.

How to use the Photo to Line Art

The tool takes 6 steps, all on your device.

  1. Drop or paste your photo, or click “Choose image”. Nothing leaves your device.

  2. Give it a few seconds the first time: the small model that draws the lines arrives by itself once your photo is in, and quick stand-in lines are shown until it does.

  3. Adjust Line weight and the Detail threshold until the lines carry the subject without noise; Even line width redraws every line at one width.

  4. Turn on Trace-ready for thin, light-grey lines that disappear under pencil when you transfer.

  5. Optionally Invert for white-on-black scratchboard-style lines, or switch to a transparent background for layering.

  6. Export a PNG up to 2,048 pixels on its long edge, an SVG of centreline strokes, or a printable PDF on A4 or Letter.

What the Photo to Line Art does

Photo to Line Art draws the contours people mark by hand, checks them against the photo, and exports them as a PNG, SVG or PDF.

  • Lines follow form, not texture

The model reads the photo in full color and was trained on edges people marked by hand, so a line lands where one form meets another and not on every change of tone. The outline holds the placement and proportion that a value study is then built on, which is why this converter belongs with the value and tone tools for artists. Grain, weave and foliage mostly stay out of the drawing.

  • Checked against the photo

The compare stage sets the line art beside the original in Split, Side by side, Flicker or Result view, with zoom. Dragging the split position shows which contours a threshold keeps and which it drops.

  • Output larger than the preview

The preview runs on a copy scaled to 1,600 pixels on its long edge. PNG and PDF exports rerun the model on the photo at up to 2,048 pixels on its long edge, with line widths scaled to match the preview. Photos above 40 megapixels are scaled down to that limit when they load.

  • Stale previews discarded

The model runs in a Web Worker, off the page's main thread. When a slider moves again before a preview finishes, the older result is thrown away instead of flashing on screen.

  • Settings kept in the link

Line weight, Detail, Even line width, the three output toggles and PDF paper are stored in the page address. Bookmarking that address reopens the same settings, but never the photo.

  • Photos stay on your device

Photo to Line Art decodes and traces your image inside the browser and sends nothing to a server. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF files can be dropped, chosen or pasted from the clipboard.

For transfers, handouts and inked layers

Working painters, art teachers, illustrators and beginners turn a photo into lines for transfers, handouts and inked layers.

  • Working painters

Trace-ready output gives a pale contour to transfer onto canvas or panel before the first wash or block-in.

  • Art teachers

A PDF at a heavier Line weight prints a bold contour handout or coloring sheet on A4 or Letter.

  • Illustrators

Transparent background (PNG) puts the lines on their own layer, ready to sit over flat color in a digital painting app.

  • Beginners

Raising the Detail threshold until only the silhouette and features remain shows which contours carry a subject before any shading starts.

Why do artists convert photos to outlines?

Artists convert photos to outlines because line art is the skeleton of a picture: proportion, contour and placement with nothing else. Artists use it to transfer a composition without smudging graphite, make coloring pages, study how a master built a figure, or strip a reference to a sketch outline of what drawing decides.

Doing this well is harder than running an edge detector: a photo's raw edges include texture, grain, cast shadows and reflections. A plain edge filter draws all of them alike, so its result reads like noise and not like a drawing.

This tool runs TEED, a small neural network (about 58,000 parameters) trained on photographs whose edges people marked by hand, so it has learned which boundaries matter (a jawline, a table edge) and which are texture. It is the only way the tool finds lines. The model (0.25 MB) and the engine that runs it (about 14 MB) come from this site once, when you add your first photo, and until they arrive quick stand-in lines from a simpler filter are shown.

The settings, explained

The SVG export traces the centrelines into strokes with round ends, not filled outlines, so a cutter, plotter or vector app draws each line once.

Detail / threshold is the sensitivity. Lower it and more texture becomes line: useful for fabric, hair and foliage; raise it and only the strongest contours remain: right for portraits and simple subjects.

Trace-ready is the modern version of a teacher's faint pencil lay-in. Print it with the PDF export and draw straight over it.

Invert produces white lines on black, which suits scratchboard, linocut planning and white-charcoal-on-toned-paper studies.

Transparent background exports the lines as dark alpha on transparency, so you can layer the line art over your own paper texture or into a digital painting app.

Printing at real size

The PDF export fits the line art to one A4 or Letter page. For a full-size cartoon to transfer to a canvas or mural, the large print tiler splits it across pages at true scale, with overlaps and alignment marks.

Tips from a working artist

From Sujith Puthran, artist and founder: what I actually do at the easel.

  1. For transfer work I always go Trace-ready and slightly less detailed than feels right: the pencil only needs the big contours; everything else I'll draw myself.

  2. Run the Image Simplifier first on busy photos. Removing texture before edge detection gives cleaner lines than any threshold setting.

  3. For portraits, raise the threshold until only the features and silhouette remain; a portrait outline with too many internal lines fights your own drawing instead of helping it.

  4. Print a test at 100% and check the line weight from arm's length. If you can't see the lines at drawing distance, increase the weight one notch.

Why your picture stays on your device

The Line Art is a program your browser downloads and runs by itself. When you choose a picture, the browser reads it from your files and does the work on your own phone or computer; no copy is sent to this site or to anyone else, and what you export is saved straight from the browser. That is why there is nothing to upload and nothing to sign up for. The privacy page says what the site does collect.

Questions about the Photo to Line Art

The 7 questions below start with outlines, trace-ready lines and noise, then turn to the model, Line weight and privacy.

Using it

How do I turn a photo into an outline for drawing?

To turn a photo into an outline for drawing, drop your photo into this tool and it draws the contours automatically. Adjust the Detail threshold until the noise disappears, turn on Trace-ready if you will draw over the print, then export a PNG or printable PDF.

What does trace-ready mean?

Trace-ready means the lines are printed in pale grey instead of black, so they guide your drawing but disappear under pencil, ink or a light wash. It is a way to transfer a reference without visible construction lines.

Why does my line art look noisy?

Noise in line art comes from texture: film grain, fabric weave, foliage and skin pores all hold small lightness changes that edge detection reads as lines. Raise the Detail threshold first. If the subject's contours fade before the texture does, flatten the texture before converting with the image simplifier, then bring the simplified photo back here.

Can I make coloring pages with this?

Yes, you can make coloring pages with this. Raise the Detail threshold until only clear, closed shapes remain, and export the printable PDF. A Line weight of 3 pixels or above keeps the outlines bold on paper.

The lines

How does the tool find the lines?

The tool finds the lines with TEED, a small neural edge model trained on photographs whose edges people marked by hand. It scores every pixel for how likely it is to sit on a contour, and the Detail threshold decides how high a score must be to become a line.

What does Line weight change?

Line weight changes how thick each line is drawn, from 1 to 6 pixels on the preview, and the export scales that width to its own size. With Even line width on, each line is thinned to its center first, so every stroke comes out at exactly that width.

Privacy

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No, your photo is not uploaded to a server. All processing happens in your browser. The image never leaves your device.
