What is box drawing practice?

Box drawing practice is the exercise of drawing boxes freehand, turned every which way, until their edges converge believably. A box has three sets of four parallel edges, and in a drawing each set runs towards its own vanishing point. Carrying the edges on to check that is how the eye learns perspective.

How to use the Perspective Box Drill Generator

The tool takes 6 steps, all on your device.

  2. Choose How fast the edges close, the Shape and the Size of the boxes.

  3. Leave Answer pages on to get a checked version of every worksheet.

  4. Look through the pages with the arrows above the preview.

  5. Choose Download PDF and print the worksheets. Draw every box right through, hidden edges included.

  6. Lay each page beside its answer page and compare which way your edges lean.

What the Perspective Box Drill Generator does

The Perspective Box Drill Generator prints boxes to draw through by hand, turned gently, medium or sharply, with numbered answers.

  • Perspective you draw by hand

Among the drawing practice tools, this one prints boxes to finish on paper. The PDF is all line, so it stays sharp at any size.

  • Gently, medium or sharply

Choose how close the eye is to the box. Close up, the far edges are much shorter than the near ones.

  • Cubes, or any box

Keep to cubes, or let every box have its own proportions: slabs, posts and bricks.

  • Numbered to match

Every box has a number, the same on the worksheet and on its answer page.

  • A4, Letter and A3

More boxes on a larger sheet, never a stretched one, and a 100 mm rule on every page to check the print.

  • Nothing to sign up for

The pack is drawn and turned into a PDF in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Drawize Academy measures a box drawn on its own canvas and names the set of edges that disagrees most, which a printed sheet cannot do. Its page says it is free and needs no account.

For anyone learning to turn a form

Beginners, figure and concept artists and teachers learn to turn a form with the boxes.

  • Beginners

Learn how to draw boxes in perspective by finishing them, with the answer one page on.

  • Figure and concept artists

Keep the box sharp: it is the head, the ribcage, the pelvis and every vehicle before it is anything else.

  • Teachers

Hand out one worksheet to the class and keep the answer page, or print a different pack for each student.

A perspective box exercise that can be checked

The usual advice is to draw a great many boxes and to check each one by extending its edges. That works, but the page of starting corners has to be invented each time, and it is easy to drift into the same few comfortable angles. Here the boxes are generated: each is turned to a random attitude in space, so the page holds views you would not have picked.

Because each one is a real box, the answer page is not an opinion. It prints the box in full and carries every edge on in a light line, one tint for each of the three directions, so you can see where each set of four is heading.

Finish, copy, turn

Finish the box gives the near corner and its three edges, the figure that looks like a Y. From those you draw the other nine edges, including the three you would not see. Copy the box prints the whole box and leaves a space beside it, with a dot for the near corner. Turn the box is a rotated boxes exercise: the first box of each row is given, and the others are the same box turned in equal steps, either round its upright axis or tipped over.

Hidden edges matter. A box drawn through shows at once whether its back corner lands where its front edges say it should.

Where the vanishing points come from

Each box has three half-sizes and a rotation, and stands a set distance from the eye. Its corners are projected through the eye onto the picture, and each set of parallel edges runs towards the picture of its own direction: that is its vanishing point. Most of these points lie well off the sheet, which is why the light lines on the answer page stop at the edge of each box's own space. Where a point does fall inside, it is ringed.

How fast the edges close depends on how near the eye is. Sharply puts the eye three half-diagonals from the box's centre, Medium five, and Gently nine.

How to use an answer page

Draw first, then look. Carry your own edges on with a ruler, lightly, and compare the lean of each set with the tinted lines on the answer page. The usual faults show quickly: a set that spreads apart where it should close, or two edges that close while the other two stay parallel. Mark the worst box, and draw it again on the next sheet.

What it leaves out

It does not mark your drawing: the comparison is yours to make. There is no horizon line, because the boxes are turned freely and each has its own three points. For a perspective grid with a horizon, see the printables for artists. For a grid over a reference photo, GridMakerPro's drawing grid maker makes those. Line and ellipse warm-ups are on the line and ellipse drill sheets.

Tips from a working artist

From Sujith Puthran, artist and founder: what I actually do at the easel.

  1. I draw the box right through every time, back corner and all. The hidden edges are where I find out whether I understood the form or only its front.

  2. When a box goes wrong I extend its edges before I rub anything out. Seeing which pair spread apart teaches me more than the corrected box does.

Questions about the Perspective Box Drill Generator

The 6 questions below cover the method, random boxes, dashed edges and the horizon line, then printing and privacy.

The exercise

How do you draw boxes in perspective?

To draw boxes in perspective, start with the near corner and its three edges. Each further edge runs alongside one of those three and leans slightly towards it, so that the set of four would meet far away. Draw the hidden edges as well, and check by carrying the edges on.

Is this a random box generator for drawing?

Yes, this is a random box generator for drawing. Every box is turned to a random attitude from the sheet code, and New sheet gives a different set. The same code always gives the same boxes.

Why are the hidden edges dashed on the answer page?

The hidden edges are dashed on the answer page because a box seen from outside shows three faces and hides one corner. The three edges that meet at that corner are the hidden ones, and drawing them is the best test of the box.

Where is the horizon line?

There is no horizon line on these sheets. The boxes are turned freely, so each has its own three vanishing points, and most of them lie off the page.

Printing and privacy

Can I print the perspective boxes worksheet without the answers?

Yes, you can print the perspective boxes worksheet without the answers. Turn off Answer pages and the PDF holds the worksheets only.

Does the Perspective Box Drill Generator upload anything?

No, the Perspective Box Drill Generator does not upload anything. The sheets are drawn and the PDF is made in your browser, and the page contacts no other server.
