What are line confidence exercises?

Line confidence exercises are short drills that train the hand to make a mark in one committed stroke: a straight line between two dots, parallel hatching, a smooth curve, an ellipse of a chosen roundness. They are done in quantity, on cheap paper, as a warm-up before drawing. This generator prints a fresh sheet for each.

How to use the Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator

The tool takes 6 steps, all on your device.

  1. Choose the Exercises you want in the pack.

  2. Choose the Paper, the Size of the figures and the Guides: Light lines or Dots only.

  3. Choose Left under Drawing hand if you draw with your left hand.

  4. Look through the pages with the arrows above the preview.

  5. Choose Download PDF and print it at 100 %. Measure the 100 mm rule at the foot of the page.

  6. Choose New sheet for different figures, or keep the code to print this one again.

What the Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator does

The Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator prints sheets to draw on, in A4, Letter and A3, with a rule that checks the print.

  • Sheets you draw on

Among the drawing practice tools, this one prints the page. Every figure is a line in the PDF, so it stays sharp at any size.

  • A4, Letter and A3

The layout is worked out for the paper chosen: more figures on a larger sheet, never a stretched one.

  • A rule to check the print

Every page carries a line exactly 100 mm long. If your ruler agrees, the printer did not scale the sheet.

  • Light lines, or dots only

Light grey guides to draw over, or dots alone, so the stroke between them is all yours.

  • One, two or three pages of each

A pack can hold up to 3 different pages of every exercise, each with its own figures.

  • Nothing to sign up for

The pack is drawn and turned into a PDF in your browser. No email address, and nothing is uploaded.

For anyone warming up the hand

Beginners, designers, illustrators and teachers warm up the hand on the sheets.

  • Beginners

Fill a page before each drawing session until a straight line and a clean ellipse come without thought.

  • Designers and illustrators

Keep ellipses and long strokes in shape for product sketches and perspective work.

  • Teachers

Print a different sheet for every student from one page of settings, or the same sheet for all from one code.

Printable drawing exercises, generated

These warm-ups are usually ruled by hand before they can be practised: a page of dots, a page of boxes, a page of funnels. That preparation is the dull part, and it is the same every time. Here the page is generated, so each sheet has figures you have not met, at lengths and angles you did not choose.

The pages are for drawing on. Print a pack, fill it, and print another. The exercises are named for what they are, and each page says in one line how to do it.

Ghosted lines and hatching

The ghosted lines exercise is a page of dot pairs: short, medium and long, at every angle. Rehearse the stroke in the air between two dots, then draw it once. The pairs never cross and are kept apart, so a stray line does not run into its neighbour. With Dots only, each pair carries a small number so you can tell which dot belongs to which.

The hatching boxes each state a direction and a spacing, such as 45° and 3 mm apart. The first three lines are shown, in light grey or as dots on the edge of the box, and the rest are yours to keep parallel.

An ellipse practice sheet with real degrees

A circle seen at an angle is an ellipse, and its degree says how open it is: 90° is the full circle, 10° is nearly a line. The short axis is the long axis times the sine of the degree, so a 30° ellipse is exactly half as wide as it is long. The Ellipses by degree page is an ellipse drawing practice worksheet: it prints one ellipse of each degree and a lane to repeat it in, with marks at the right width.

Ellipses in planes prints four-sided planes, and the ellipse to draw touches all four sides. The guide lines cross at the plane's centre and end where the ellipse touches. Ellipses in funnels prints pairs of curves with a centre line; the ellipses stand across the funnel, touch each other and keep one degree. The first plane and the first funnel on a page show the answer in light grey.

Curves, tapers and value scales

A C curve is drawn through three dots and an S curve through four, in one stroke. Pressure tapers are long strokes that begin heavy and lift to nothing, the reverse, or swell in the middle; the large dot is the heavy end. Hatching value scales print a strip of greys from light to dark with an empty box under each to hatch until it matches. The greys are evenly spaced in lightness, though a printer will shift them a little.

Printing it at the right size

Print at 100 %, or Actual size, not Fit to page. Then lay a ruler on the 100 mm rule at the foot of the sheet. If it reads 100 mm, the spacings stated on the hatching boxes are true as well. For more printed aids, see the printables for artists.

What it leaves out

It does not mark your work: the sheets are for the hand, and no photo is taken of the result. There are no boxes in perspective here. The printed greys depend on your printer. A sheet code brings back the same figures only with the same paper, size and exercise.

Tips from a working artist

From Sujith Puthran, artist and founder: what I actually do at the easel.

  1. I print on the cheapest paper I have. A sheet I am not afraid to waste gets filled faster, and the lines on it are braver.

  2. I draw every ellipse round twice before judging it. The second pass shows me which way the first one leaned.

  3. After lines and ellipses come boxes. The Perspective Box Drill Generator prints boxes turned at random, each sheet with an answer page.

Questions about the Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator

The 6 questions below cover ghosted lines, ellipse degrees, repeat sheets and left-handed pages, then printing and privacy.

The sheets

What is the ghosted lines exercise?

In the ghosted lines exercise, you mark two dots, move the pen between them in the air a few times to rehearse the stroke, and then draw the line once, without correcting it. The sheet prints the dots for you.

What does the degree of an ellipse mean?

The degree of an ellipse is the angle at which a circle is seen. At 90° you see the whole circle; at smaller degrees it narrows. The short axis equals the long axis times the sine of the degree.

Can I get the same sheet again?

Yes, you can get the same sheet again. The sheet code is in the address and printed at the foot of every page. The same code with the same paper, size and exercises gives the same sheet.

Is there a line practice worksheet PDF for left-handed artists?

Yes, there is a line practice worksheet PDF for left-handed artists. Choose Left under Drawing hand and the page is mirrored, so the printed examples sit on the side your hand does not cover.

Printing and privacy

How do I print it at the right size?

Choose 100 % or Actual size in the print dialog, then measure the 100 mm rule at the foot of the page with a ruler.

Does the Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator upload anything?

No, the Line & Ellipse Drill Sheet Generator does not upload anything. The sheets are drawn and the PDF is made in your browser, and the page contacts no other server.
